The sewage issue at Lonehill Dam persists despite Johannesburg Water’s repairs
The sewage crisis at Lonehill Dam has taken a turn for the worse. Despite recent repairs sewage continues to plague Lonehill Dam as it flows into the dam and poses a significant health risk to residents.
Lonehill residents have expressed growing frustration over the ongoing sewage pollution affecting the local dam, a recurring issue that has raised significant health and environmental concerns.
Ward 94 councillor David Foley reassured the community that he is actively collaborating with Johannesburg Water (JW) and Johannesburg City Parks and Zoo (JCPZ) to address these pressing matters.

“We must resolve this sewage issue, not only for the safety and health of our residents but also for the wellbeing of our local ecosystem. The integrity of Lonehill Dam is vital, not only for recreational purposes but also for the wildlife that depends on it. I am committed to working diligently with all parties involved to ensure swift action is taken.”
Despite sewerage repairs being completed just weeks ago, sewage has again begun leaking into the dam, exacerbating an alarming situation. An overflow of Kariba weeds has also filled the dam.
The Lonehill Residents Association (LRA) has proactively communicated ongoing efforts to the community.
“For nearly four weeks now, raw sewage has been flowing into the dam. Out of caution, the LRA Green Team has refrained from working in or near the water,” stated the LRA’s latest newsletter update.

“We want to reassure the community that removing these weeds is a very labour-intensive process with slow results. However, it is during times like these that we see just how much of a difference our work has made in the past. This week marks the fourth week of inactivity in the dam, and it is clear: Without our intervention, the weeds have thrived.”
In light of these developments, notices have been posted around the dam advising residents to keep their distance from the water while testing is underway. “We continue to monitor the water quality closely and are committed to resolving this issue,” the LRA said.
Residents are urged to remain patient and not to be alarmed by the rampant weeds. “The LRA Green Team has successfully restored the dam in the past and is prepared to do so again, contingent upon receiving an all-clear from environmental authorities.”
As of now, JW has not responded to inquiries regarding the ongoing sewage issue at Lonehill Dam.
