JMPD to fine those not adhering to fireworks by-laws this festive season

JMPD spokesperson Xolani Fihla urged residents to be heedful, to refrain from using fireworks near hospitals, schools, and animal shelters, and to stick to the times and circumstances where fireworks are permitted.

While fireworks can add excitement to festive season celebrations, especially on New Year’s Eve, it is imperative to use them responsibly to ensure everyone’s safety.

The Johannesburg Metro Police Department’s (JMPD) By-Law Management Unit (BMU), through their spokesperson Superintendent Xolani Fihla, said they urge responsible fireworks use this festive season.

He said they would like to remind residents of the City of Johannesburg about the regulations governing the use of fireworks during the festive season.

“Fireworks may only be used on specific days, including Guy Fawkes Day, Diwali, Christmas Eve, Day of Goodwill, New Year’s Eve, and New Year’s Day. On these days, fireworks can only be used between 19:00 and 22:00, except for New Year’s Eve, when they can be used between 23:00 and 01:00. Fireworks cannot be used in public places, such as schools, hospitals, or old age homes, or within 500m of a petrol station or explosives factory,” said Fihla.

He said setting and igniting them outside the above times will carry a R500 fine, and the lighting of fireworks in places where there are animals present will result in a R1000 fine.

Fihla added that huge pyrotechnics and fireworks displays must be authorized by the council at least 14 days before the event.
And for those who wish to sell and deal with fireworks, a license will be required.

“No one under 16 years can use explosives without adult supervision. The JMPD will be actively monitoring compliance with these regulations and will take appropriate action against individuals who violate the law. This includes issuing fines and confiscating illegal fireworks. The JMPD urges residents to be considerate of their neighbours and to avoid using fireworks in densely populated areas or near hospitals, schools, and animal shelters,” added Fihla.

Safety for pets when fireworks are being used:

• Keep your pet indoors with curtains drawn when using fireworks.
• Never throw lit fireworks at pets.
• Contact animal welfare organisations such as SPCA, Society for Animals in Distress (Said), or CLAW if you see an animal being abused with fireworks.
• If fireworks are being used near your home, put your pet in a safe, interior room to avoid exposure to the sound.
• Make sure your pet has an identification tag, in case it runs off during a fireworks display.
