Carolyn pens emotional tribute to husband, Douw Steyn

Carolyn Steyn who has shared a life with the late Douw Steyn for over two decades, took to social media to mourn his passing, "I am broken" she writes.

In an emotional Facebook post, accompanied by cherished photos of her and her beloved husband, Douw Steyn’s wife, Carolyn took a moment to relive the day her husband passed away.

Douw, who is a well-known for his billionaire status, philanthropic heart and as the founder of Steyn City died on February 4. His wife, Carolyn said it was around 07:18 when the monitor at his hospital bed flatlined.

“As I was about to eat, the lights dimmed all on their own!‘Douw?’ I called…Was it a ‘sign’? Who knows,” she wrote on her page.

“My heart and soul are shattered into a million pieces. I am broken. Douw has been my all, my everything for twenty-five years and I know that I was his everything. We were meant for each other. Douw was my destiny. He was in fact my raison d’être [reason for living]. I don’t know how I am going to navigate the rest of my life without my soul mate.”

She said she is grateful for all the wonderful messages that have been written about him over the past few days; his business acumen, his brilliance, his generosity, his philanthropy, the way he uplifted and changed hundreds of thousands of lives (if not millions of lives) in South Africa and globally.

He was a titan, a maverick, a mogul, a legend, a patriot, a true son of South Africa’s soil.

But to his wife, he was so much more – her best friend, soulmate, and everything in between. Together, they shared a passion for making a difference in the world. His wife, a renowned philanthropist, founded a global movement called 67 Blankets dedicated to supporting those in need on Madiba Day by knitting and crocheting items for them.

“Not a day went by where we did not tell each other ‘I love you.’ He was my ‘hunny bunny’, I was his ‘poopsie doll’. He loved Elvis and in our gym every single day, (including Sundays), Douw would cycle to the sounds of Elvis Presley. But our song, which together we used to sing at the top of our lungs was Andrew Lloyd Webber’s ‘Love Changes Everything’. And it does.

“Douw my baby, I am going to miss you with every fibre of my being. I love you. Rest well my love. You fought a hard battle over so many years. You conquered your demons, you became so kind, loving and gentle. You held my hand every single day. Thank you for giving me confidence, thank you for giving me wings, thank you for choosing me to be your loving wife.

“It has been my greatest privilege to walk this long and sometimes difficult and painful journey at your side. You fought so valiantly and with such dignity. You never did lose your sense of humour and you are the only one who could make me laugh from the bottom of my toes. Rest well my love. My heart belongs to you through all eternity. And right this minute my heart has shattered into a thousand more pieces.”
