Local paddlers conquer the Drak River Challenge
Fourways paddlers Matthew and Ethan Cockram, Clive Evans, and Andrew Cooper splash their way at the N3TC Drak River Challenge, with impressive results.
A sizable contingent of paddlers from Gauteng made their mark at the N3TC Drak River Challenge, one of South Africa’s premier canoe races, set against the stunning backdrop of the KZN Midlands.
Among the participants were Fourways residents Matthew and Ethan Cockram, Clive Evans, and Andrew Cooper, who faced the exhilarating and challenging course with determination.
Cockram delivered a remarkable performance, finishing the grueling two-day race in 04:21:00, securing 14th place in the U23 category and 55th overall in the K1 (single kayak) division.

His father, Matthew, finished 15th in the sub grand master age category with an overall time of 05:42:00, and placing 152nd in the K1.
Evans, who completed the two-day race in 04:47:00, placed 6th in the grand master age category and 97th overall.
Cooper also showcased his skills, finishing 11th in the sub grand master category, crossing the line in 05:03:00, and placing 126th overall in the K1 category.

“The challenging conditions brought out the competitive spirit, and everyone enjoyed the beautiful scenery and clean waters,” said Jennie Dallas, the media liaison for Gauteng Canoeing Union.
Day one of the race kicked off at Swartburg Bridge, with participants navigating a thrilling 38km course that included tricky rapids in the renowned gorges, including Glenhaven, known for its lead shifts.
The second day saw paddlers launching from Castleburn Bridge for an approximately 25km stretch, concluding at Swartburg Bridge.
The course is known for its technical challenges, with the notorious Black Murray rapid serving as the final hurdle before the finish line.
In addition to the canoeing events, the weekend offered a lively atmosphere with trail running and mountain biking races happening simultaneously in the bustling mountain region.
