Joburg braces for potential snowfall as cold front approaches
Johannesburg could be in for a rare winter treat next week with forecasts hinting at possible snowfall across parts of Gauteng.
Johannesburg residents may want to dust off their coats as early forecasts suggest that parts of Gauteng could see actual snowfall early next week.
According to the South African Weather Service (SAWS) a severe cut-off low system is currently developing and may bring disruptive snowfalls to surrounding provinces beginning on June 9, Monday.
“A significant and dramatic drop in temperatures can be expected over all provinces with the possible exception of Limpopo,” said SAWS in a statement.

This cold snap is expected to push temperatures into the single digits, with some areas potentially seeing below-freezing conditions, a combination that could lead to icy roads and travel disruptions.
With the Comrades Marathon taking place this weekend, there’s also concern about potential delays and safety risks for runners and supporters returning home.

City of Johannesburg Emergency Management Services (EMS) has already placed teams on alert, urging residents to be cautious especially when using heaters and other warming devices .
If travel next week is unavoidable, officials strongly recommend packing warm clothing, food, and basic emergency supplies, especially if you’re heading towards outlying areas where snow is more likely.
