Community rallies to help remove cancerous kidney
Thanks to community donations, Craig Goodliffe has undergone life-saving surgery to remove a kidney consumed by cancer and is now recovering well.
The family of Craig Goodliffe (55) has expressed deep gratitude to the community after he underwent a successful life-saving kidney removal surgery, made possible through generous donations.
Goodliffe, described by his daughter, Kelsea De Oliveira, as a strong, active, and health-conscious man, was diagnosed with a massive tumour on his right kidney in April after falling seriously ill.
The shocking diagnosis led to an urgent call for community support to help cover the estimated R300 000 needed for surgery.

Thanks to the overwhelming kindness of family, friends, and community members, the funds were raised, enabling Goodliffe to receive the critical surgery privately at Netcare, where his right kidney was removed.
The tumour, which had consumed almost the entire kidney, was fully contained, and doctors confirmed his adrenal glands and lymph nodes were unaffected.
“The surgery was a huge success,” said De Oliviera, “and they are even taking his kidney for studies because it was almost 100% consumed by the tumour. We’re so thankful to everyone who made this possible.”
Goodliffe has been diagnosed with stage 2, grade 2 kidney cancer and will continue with regular follow-up appointments with his urologist, while the oncology board reviews his case to determine if immunotherapy will be required as part of his recovery plan.

De Oliveira confirmed that he is currently recovering well, despite some discomfort as his body adjusts to the loss of a kidney and heals from the operation. “We are incredibly grateful to our community, friends, and family for helping us save my dad. Your support and donations meant the world to us. It’s because of you that my dad is back home, recovering and able to look forward to many more moments with his three grandchildren.”
