Diepsloot dog overcomes rare paralysis with help from 4Paws

A dog named Lillian gave her paw-rent a scare, but thanks to 4Paws’ pawsome care, she conquered her condition. Now, 4Paws needs help with her vet bills.

A call from a concerned resident in Diepsloot township led 4Paws, a Fourways-based animal rescue organisation, to save a dog suffering from a rare condition that left her paralysed.

“The resident explained that his dog, who recently had puppies, could not move, and that she was just lying down,” said Merinda Brits of 4Paws.

She said, fortunately, her puppies were already eating solid food, allowing rescuers to separate Lillian, as she was named, from her litter and take her to a veterinarian. “Our vet diagnosed her with a rare immune-mediated condition that affects the nerves, causing paralysis, though she remained mentally alert.”

Lillian received intensive treatment to reduce inflammation, along with physical therapy to prevent muscle wasting. “Above all, she received time and love,” Brits said, adding that these were key to her recovery.

Over the following weeks, Lillian slowly regained mobility, taking small steps until she was finally ready to return home. “This story serves as a reminder of the important work we do, and the many lives we save. Now, please help us with Lillian’s vet bills.”

Founded in 2006, 4Paws has rescued countless animals in need. To support and contribute to the organisation’s lifesaving work, contact 083 377 3219, or email: merinda@4ourpaws.org.za.
