Aging pipes leave Lonehill residents with constant bursts and dry taps
Streets in Lonehill have been hit by multiple pipe bursts over the past six months, leaving residents without water and their homes flooded. Councillor Vino Reddy has called on Johannesburg Water to urgently investigate and provide lasting solutions.
Residents in Lonehill’s Lewis Lane and surrounding streets are growing increasingly frustrated after months of repeated pipe bursts, leaving homes and gardens flooded and households without water.
Ward 93 councillor Vino Reddy has raised the issue with Johannesburg Water (JW), highlighting the severity of the problem.

“The residents of Lewis Lane have been plagued by multiple bursts over the last six months, many recurring in the same location as previous incidents.
“In early August, when water was restored to residents, four meters burst almost immediately due to high water pressure, while the JW team was still on site.”
The issue has not been limited to Lewis Lane. According to Reddy, bursts have also affected Turley, Dennis, and Cheyney roads, causing repeated water outages that, at times, last a full day.
“Since the two pipes burst at the intersection of Turley and Leslie roads on August 31, residents were without water for the entire day. Water would sometimes be restored in the evening, only to be cut off again the following morning.”
Residents say the repeated incidents have taken a toll. “We’ve been extremely patient over the past six months,” said one resident, who asked to remain anonymous, “but we’re growing weary of the constant disruptions.”
He said the ongoing bursts are linked to the aging infrastructure in Lonehill. The resident, who has been living in the area for 13 years, recalled that previous efforts to replace old pipes, tabled before Reddy took the reigns as councillor of the area, never came to fruition.

“The problem has worsened over the past five years.”
The repeated pipe bursts have also caused significant disruption to traffic, particularly along Turley Road, and repair works on Leslie Road have created chaos for motorists in the area.
Reddy has urged JW to give the matter urgent attention, and to investigate the underlying causes, calling for sustainable solutions to prevent future bursts and restore reliability to the area’s water supply.
