Traffic flows freely again after Montecasino intersection upgrade

Motorists and pedestrians breathe a sigh of relief as traffic lights are restored and congestion eases at the busy Fourways intersection.

After months of traffic delays, motorists in Fourways can finally expect smoother traffic flow at the Montecasino intersection opposite Pineslopes Shopping Centre.

The intersection upgrade, a project led by the Gauteng Department of Roads and Transport (GPDRT) in partnership with Montecasino, has now been completed, allowing for better access between The Straight Avenue and Montecasino Boulevard.

Ward 93 councillor Vino Reddy, who had previously raised concerns about the prolonged disruptions, confirmed that power supply issues affecting the traffic lights were resolved last week.

Reddy said the contractors were on site connecting new cables to the traffic lights on October 9. “I’d like to thank the contractors, GPDRT, and JRA for their prompt response and efficient work in preventing major traffic disruptions. Going forward, improved signage, particularly lane closure and detour signs, would be greatly appreciated to give motorists early warning.”

The intersection had been a major source of frustration for residents and pedestrians alike, with non-functioning lights and no permanent pointsmen leading to long queues and dangerous crossings.

Local resident Dikeledi Tefo previously described the intersection as impossible to cross safely, saying pedestrians often had to run for their lives.

Reddy acknowledged these concerns and noted that co-ordination between different authorities remains a challenge. “When projects like this happen, it’s vital that the city and ward councillors are consulted from the start. We’re the first line of contact when residents experience issues.”
