Fourways’ Starfish Greathearts Foundation fights hunger on World Food Day

With food insecurity affecting thousands of South African families, the Starfish Greathearts Foundation observed World Food Day by providing support… One food parcel at a time.

According to Statistics South Africa’s general household survey, about 15% of South African households reported not having enough food, while 6% faced severe food shortages.

In a country where food insecurity is a major social issue, the Starfish Greathearts Foundation, a Fourways based non-profit organisation, took part in the global call for action on World Food Day, on October 16, by distributing food parcels to 10 vulnerable families from one of its supporting centres in Tembisa.

Poonam Dwarkaram, operations manager at Starfish Greathearts Foundation, explained that the initiative aimed to emphasise the importance of nutrition and sustainable food practices to ensure that no child goes hungry. “Nutrition is a basic human right that everyone should have access to, but many don’t. South Africa faces significant challenges in nutrition. High rates of malnutrition, obesity, and food insecurity affect various groups.”

Dwarkaram also explained that the foundation has always focused on nutrition, recognising that good nutrition allows children to grow up healthy, strong, and able to reach their potential. “This year, we were able to support 10 families with nutritious food for a full month. This could only happen thanks to the generosity of our funders and donors, to whom we are very grateful.”

Starfish Greathearts Foundation urges the community to support them in this worthy cause. “Every bit helps… One child at a time.”
