Fourways equestrian shares magic with her horse during 2025 season

Emma Hassell has ridden her way to success this Sanesa season, earning multiple awards and representing Gauteng with pride, all with her trusted partner, Maverick’s Magic.

Emma Hassell has galloped to new heights in the South African National Equestrian Schools Association (Sanesa) competitions this year.

The talented rider was awarded regional Gauteng colours for both equitation and prix caprilli, as well as provincial school equestrian colours.

She also proudly claimed the title of victor ludorum for high school prix caprilli level 5, an impressive feat for her first year competing in the discipline. “I feel proud of myself and my horse. Maverick and I both worked hard this year, and achieving good results has made it all worth it.”

For those unfamiliar with the sport, Emma explained that prix caprilli combines elements of dressage and jumping, testing both the horse’s obedience and the rider’s control. Equitation, on the other hand, focuses on precision, posture, and how skilfully the rider executes a set test.

“This was my first time riding prix caprilli classes,” she said, “so it took a lot of preparation and focus. I’m really happy about our achievement.”

Emma’s equestrian journey began in 2020, when a friend introduced her to riding. “I fell in love with it instantly. Mostly, I love the connection I have with my horse.”

Her partner, an eight-year-old thoroughbred named Maverick’s Magic, has been by her side since he was just three years old. “He’s an honest horse. We’ve trained together from the beginning, and that makes our partnership special.”

Looking ahead, Emma hopes to continue developing. “Next year, I want to focus on strengthening our bond and competing at a higher level.”

Her advice to new riders: “Always believe in yourself, if you work hard enough, you can achieve all your goals.”

For her mother, Debbi Hassel, watching Emma’s growth has been a rewarding journey of its own. “I love being part of Emma’s journey and seeing her growth as a rider over the years. It hasn’t been easy, training a young horse from scratch, so she really deserves these achievements.”

Being a horse rider parent comes with its own challenges: Early mornings, long days at the stables, and a fair share of nerves.

“There’s a lot of driving, many hours at shows, and dealing with disappointment, but we always stay positive.”
