Young stars find their spotlight in week-long Drama Lab
From nervous first steps to confident curtain calls, 35 local children discovered the power of drama during a week-long Drama Lab, culminating in a festive mini-production that delighted families and showcased the confidence-building magic of the performing arts.
Thirty-five local children showed just how powerful the performing arts can be during a week-long Drama Lab held at Rivonia Recreation Club, Paulshof.
From December 8-12, children aged seven to 11 took part in the inaugural Drama Lab, an intensive holiday programme that challenged young performers to create and stage a full mini-production in just five days.
What began as a simple rehearsal space soon transformed into a vibrant world of drama, dance, and imagination.

The programme culminated on December 12, when proud parents and family members gathered to watch the final performance. The festive production received enthusiastic applause, marking the Drama Lab as a resounding success.
The show was led by Kerry Chapman, principal of the Helen O’Grady Drama Academy Johannesburg North West.

She said the goal was to show children the confidence-building power of drama while nurturing creativity, teamwork, and self-expression.
“It was incredible to see the transformation. Some children arrived on Monday feeling shy and unsure, and by Friday, they were confidently owning the stage. Every child, from the quietest to the most outgoing, played a meaningful role in the final show.”

Due to the strong support and interest from the community, Chapman called on Tim Hulse, principal of the Helen O’Grady Drama Academy North East, to help with the programme. This ensured that each child received focused attention and guidance.
The mini-production embraced the festive season with the heart-warming story: How Rudolph the Very Clever Reindeer Saved Christmas Day.
The stage came alive with Snowmen, Gingerbread Gals, Reindeers, Snow Angels, Elves, Presents, and the dramatic villain of the tale, a powerful Snowstorm.
Movement and energy were brought to the production by choreographer Kerry de Gersigny, who created accessible and enjoyable routines suitable for all skill levels.
Her choreography ensured that even children with no previous dance experience could participate fully and perform with confidence.
Following the success of the inaugural Drama Lab, the Helen O’Grady Drama Academy will offer drama classes again in 2026.
