Businesses and residents along Peltier Drive in Sunninghill are facing disruption after five pipe bursts over the weekend left the road with multiple excavations.

Fourways Review and Sunninghill Community Ratepayers Association suburb manager Tracy Kensey visited the site on April 20. There were three open holes on the road, and one reinstatement with exposed wiring.

Kensey said the situation had escalated rapidly as multiple bursts occurred in the same area.

“We have a massive hole, which was three bursts that were actually part of the same hole. We had a re-burst in the same hole. On the other side of me, we had a fourth burst over the weekend.

“We experience pipe bursts here at least twice a month. This shows how tired the infrastructure is, and Joburg Water needs to consider replacing the pipes as a permanent solution rather than continuing with temporary repairs.”

Kensey explained that each burst triggers delays and added costs, particularly for nearby businesses.

“Each time we have no water, these businesses are paying for their own tankers.”

She added that even recent repairs failed almost immediately.

“No sooner had the first burst been fixed on Friday, water was put back on; it was shooting sky-high, we had the third burst, we had the fourth burst.”

The association and the ward councillor, Vino Reddy, have called for a public engagement with authorities to find a lasting solution.

“We cannot be spending this kind of money week in and week out with no long-term solution in sight.”

Beyond water outages, the road itself has deteriorated, with potholes reopening due to flooding.

Businesses have been forced to carry out temporary fixes at their own cost, while frustration continues to grow.

Joburg Water was contacted for comment regarding the ongoing issues on Peltier Drive from March 20, with follow-up queries sent, the latest on April 21.

No response had been received except for inquiry acknowledgements from Phakamani Ndlovu.
