Former Itirele-Zenzele Comprehensive High School learners return to inspire the next generation

Former learners returned to Itirele-Zenzele Comprehensive High School during a youth month event to inspire learners with stories of perseverance, higher education, and success.

As South Africa commemorates the spirit of the 1976 youth, former learners of Itirele-Zenzele Comprehensive High School returned to their old school to encourage and motivate the next generation.

The youth month event brought together current learners and former learners who have gone on to pursue higher education.

Some graduates attended wearing their graduation regalia, creating a powerful visual reminder that success is possible regardless of where one comes from.

History teacher Mxhego Gcobani, one of the organisers of the event, said the programme aimed to bridge the gap between learners and graduates, allowing young people to learn from real-life experiences while exploring possibilities for further education and personal growth after matric.

He added that the event was linked to the legacy of the 1976 generation, and the sacrifices made by student organisations that fought for access to quality education.

Among the guests was former learner Onthatile Mosweu, who returned to the school to give hope to learners growing up in Diepsloot.

“I wanted to show them that I am no different from them. I come from the same community and attended the same school. If I can achieve my goals, they can too.”

Mosweu spoke openly about the challenges she faced while growing up in Diepsloot, including safety concerns and the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on her matric year.

Despite these obstacles, she completed her schooling. While addressing learners, she encouraged them to focus on their education and future goals.

“The future is uncertain and sometimes scary, but do not let that stop you. Finish school, gain skills, and keep working towards your dreams.”

Gcobani said the message to learners was simple: Dream big, remain disciplined, courageous, and determined.

The event allowed learners to ask questions directly of former learners, who once sat in the same classrooms and walked the same corridors. For many, it was a reminder that their dreams are achievable.
