Riverside gogos rewrite the story of ageing

Through sewing, singing, exercise and friendship, members of the Tshwarafa Oldies Club are proving that growing older does not mean growing lonely.

What began as a simple solution to loneliness has become a lifeline for dozens of senior citizens in Riverside.

The Tshwarafa Oldies Club was founded in 2017 by Susan Mboniswa after she and several elderly residents moved from Diepsloot to Riverside and could no longer attend the social club they belonged to.

“I was the chairperson of Vuka Uzenzele in Diepsloot. When we moved here, transport became a challenge because taxis did not come this side. Many gogos had also moved here, so I decided to start our own group instead of travelling back to Diepsloot,” said Mboniswa.

Today, the registered NPO has three branches in Riverside and provides a space where senior citizens meet daily from 10:00 to 14:00.

Members spend their days sewing bags, duvet covers and clothing, knitting, singing in a choir, exercising and taking walks to keep active.

The handmade items are sold for between R10 and R30, helping members cover everyday expenses such as transport to clinics, electricity and bread.

Mboniswa said the club’s name, Tshwarafa, reflects the diversity of its members.

“It is a mix of the different languages spoken by our members, including Sotho, Tswana and Venda, and it represents unity and coming together.”

Besides keeping active, members also receive support from social workers, lawyers and counsellors, while regularly taking part in choir competitions and wellness activities.

“Our goal is to ensure that no elderly person feels isolated. We want them to stay active, healthy and connected to others in the community,” Mboniswa said.
