Crawford Fourways learners speak up and stand out

Crawford International Fourways Grade 7 learners put their confidence and communication skills to the test in a public-speaking competition.

Crawford International Fourways Grade 7 learners found their voices through public speaking, with the school using the activity to equip learners with a valuable skill they can carry throughout their lives.

“Public speaking is a skill that kids need throughout their lives, whether it’s at work, school or at home,” said principal Shivani Sahadeo.

She said the school offers public speaking as part of its extracurricular programme, where learners attend weekly sessions and are encouraged to explore the discipline and develop their confidence.

“Learners who participate in the programme are given guidance and support before being selected to represent the school in competitions.”

She credited Monica Miller, who assists with public speaking, for helping learners prepare and develop their skills.

“I think our kids on their prepared speeches were absolutely fabulous. They are dedicated, they are committed to it, and they have practised. And they deliver beautiful speeches.”

Pincus emphasised the importance of preparation while encouraging learners to make their speeches personal.

“When you’re preparing a speech, try to put in your personal idea by saying, ‘I remember’ or ‘my first memory’,” she said.

She explained that bringing personal experiences into a speech allows the audience to connect with the individual behind the words.

“Every one of you is different. Every one of you has a different personality. And that’s what makes life so exciting.”

Pincus also praised learners who appeared relaxed while speaking, explaining that a confident and comfortable speaker helps the audience feel at ease.

Sahadeo said the school hopes that by introducing learners to public speaking at an early age, they will develop confidence and communication skills that will benefit them at school, in future careers and in their everyday lives.
