Drunk driver arrested after 24-year-old dies in Douglasdale crash
A 24-year-old driver has tragically lost his life following an early-morning crash at a Douglasdale intersection on August 23. JMPD officers arrested the surviving driver at the scene after he allegedly tested nearly four times over the legal alcohol limit.
A 24-year-old man has died following a fatal two-vehicle collision in Douglasdale in the early hours of August 23.
The Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) shared details of the crash in a media statement posted on its social media pages. The collision, according to the media statement, happened at about 3:31 at the intersection of Douglas Drive and Taylor Road.

JMPD said both vehicles were travelling north along Douglas Drive, with a white Kia Pegas travelling ahead of a blue BMW 320i. “It is alleged that the driver of the BMW collided with the rear of the Kia Pegas.”
The impact reportedly caused the Kia driver to lose control of the vehicle. The car veered off the left side of the road before crashing into the boundary wall of a private property.
The 24-year-old driver of the Kia sustained fatal injuries and was declared dead at the scene. His body was transported to Hillbrow State Mortuary. The BMW driver was not injured.
JMPD said the BMW driver was suspected of driving under the influence of alcohol. A breathalyser test recorded a reading of 0.87mg/l, significantly above the legal limit of 0.24mg/l. “The driver was arrested at the scene for driving inder the influence (DUI) of alcohol and culpable homicide.”

He was detained at Douglasdale SAPS and is expected to appear in court.
The metro police have again warned motorists against driving after consuming alcohol. “Operating a vehicle while intoxicated poses a serious risk to public safety.”
The department added that officers would continue enforcing a zero-tolerance stance on Johannesburg roads.
