JRA delays Tiati Road stormwater repair despite Joburg Water work order

Joburg Water has confirmed that its burst pipe repairs damaged a stormwater drain on Tiati Road, while JRA says a backlog and outstanding documentation have delayed reinstatement.

Sunninghill residents face ongoing delays in the restoration of damaged infrastructure in Tiati Road, with municipal backlogs stalling repairs.

The issue has left the Sunninghill Community Ratepayers and Association (SCRA) questioning why the affected infrastructure has not been restored months after residents first raised concerns.

Tracy Kensey of the SCRA visited the site to highlight the outstanding repairs, saying the damage occurred in 2025 during work undertaken by Johannesburg Water.

“So we’re in Tiati Road in Sunninghill. Here we have another issue which was caused by Joburg Water. JRA needs to rebuild this kerb inlet, which is a curb inlet for the stormwater drain to be able to flow,” Kensey said.

She recalled that Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) had previously indicated that the repairs would be completed within a month.

“In June, JRA said this would be done in a month, which is July. It is now October, and we’re still waiting for this to be reinstated,” she said.

Johannesburg Water spokesperson Nombuso Shabalala said, “Johannesburg Water is aware of the damaged stormwater drain on Tiati Road, Sunninghill. And yes, the entity confirms that the stormwater drain was damaged during burst pipe repairs by Johannesburg Water,” Shabalala said.

She added that a work order had been issued to JRA.

However, JRA Acting Head of Department for Regional Operations, Mpho Maruping, said the reinstatement process was still being finalised.

“JRA and JW are in the process of finalising all the documentation related to this reinstatement,” Maruping said.

He acknowledged that the agency had experienced delays. “We are dealing with a backlog of reinstatements; unfortunately our programme was delayed,” he said.

JRA said it anticipated starting the work from October 19. The outstanding repairs have raised concerns about the coordination required between the two entities, particularly as Johannesburg Water has confirmed that a work order was issued while JRA said documentation is still being finalised.
