JRA reconstructs Sunninghill stormwater inlet after year-long delay

Johannesburg Water has confirmed that its burst pipe repairs damaged a stormwater drain on Tiati Road, but the reinstatement remains outstanding.

Sunninghill residents can expect relief as Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) workers reconstruct a stormwater inlet at the Tana Road and Lingerette Avenue intersection.

The repair work follows a site meeting between Johannesburg Water, JRA, Ward 93 councillor Vino Reddy and Ward 93 councillor candidate Tracy Kensey.

“This excavation has been open for approximately a year. So there’s been a bit of a tussle between Johannesburg Water and JRA to ascertain where the water is coming from,” said Kensey.

An inspection conducted after the meeting identified the water as groundwater, allowing JRA to proceed with the reconstruction. Workers are building a concrete base and brick structure to restore the stormwater inlet.

Reddy confirmed he called the meeting after weeks of indecision over which entity was responsible for the repairs. “After much discussion, JRA agreed to start rebuilding the inlet and at the same time investigate the source of the water, which was determined to be fresh. JW had previously tested the water, proving this.”

“All parties agreed on the way forward as the JRA will construct the new stormwater inlet,” he added.

The start of repairs marks progress on an issue that has frustrated residents and raised concerns about the prolonged delay in reinstating the affected section of road.
