SA squad vaults to World Equestrian Games
BLUE HILLS - SA's vaulting squad has earned its way to the World Equestrian Games in Normandy, France, that will be held from 23 August to 7 September.
This young squad has worked hard to reach these rankings in the sport. The team consists of eight riders, with 16-year-old Julia Pitchford as the team’s individual participant. She will also compete in the overall team.
Pitchford, who has been vaulting for nine years, explained her life revolved around the sport and it was not a job or hobby but her passion.
Younger riders James Turner (14) and Karabo Mafokate (13) show the same enthusiasm for the sport, and despite being so young, have qualified to compete in this international event.
Long hours of riding are required. However, the team says the physical aspect of the sport is only half the battle. Weekly visits to their psychologists are needed in order to prepare for the stresses and pressures of the competition. And they also follow a strict diet and exercise regime. What makes this team so special is not only their passion for the sport but their dedication to their teammates – and this includes their horses.

The team leaves for Germany on 9 August, where they will undergo intensive training and conditioning for the competition. Sadly, their training horse Mr Watt, will not be able to make the trip and a horse in Germany will be outsourced. They will be accompanied by their trainer.
