Sportsman races for positivity
KYA SAND - Kya Sand resident German Khobo (35) is passionate about sport as a means to upliftment.
Khobo was the champion of the police versus community race at the Douglasdale Sector 1 CPF fun run last year, and this year he placed in the top four. He said the only reason he didn’t win the race again this year was because he had cycled 40km the day before. Not only is Khobo a strong runner, but he’s also recently taken up cycling.
He will cycle in the 947 Cycle Challenge this year, but unlike most other contestants he will first cycle to the start of the race and also cycle home from the finish line after the race.
“I don’t have a car so I use cycling, not just for sport, but also to get around,” he explained. Khobo trains on his bicycle two times a week and cycles for 40km each time. When he isn’t honing his skills on the bicycle, he trains for the Comrades Marathon.
Khobo believes strongly that sport can uplift and empower people. He grew up in a rural area in Hermanskraal and came to Johannesburg in 2004.
He said people from rural areas often fell victim to the allure of the city and became involved in negative activities because they did not have enough self-esteem to resist.
He believes that through sport and fitness, people can develop a healthy self-esteem and build positivity in their lives. He is also currently recording a gospel album to spread this message. Despite Khobo’s positive outlook on life he has encountered financial difficulty in his efforts to compete in both cycling and running races. He is making a plea to the community for help with sponsorship so that he can continue to show people the power of sport.
