Taylors intend to dominate Port Elizabeth

CHARTWELL - Husband and wife duo Lorette Knowles Taylor and Barry Taylor made their way down to Port Elizabeth on 10 November to compete in the showjumping Nissan World Cup Qualifier, where both of them will compete for the title.

Lorette and Barry explained how they are able to balance their marriage with the fast-paced competitive scene of showjumping.

The Taylors own Farnham Stables in Chartwell, which is home to almost 70 horses. The pair manage to balance the hectic schedule of being parents, stable owners and pro-showjumpers. They practise at least six times a week, preparing themselves both mentally and physically.

“Our training comprises fitness work, gymnastic work and technical line or course work, and then obviously some fun outrides for horse and rider to de-stress,” explained Lorette.

She said each competition or event comprises various techniques and practise regimes, “Derby practise is obviously quite a big deal as we only have one derby per year, so the horses aren’t used to seeing the natural type of jumps that the derby has.”

She added that extra training is required, as world cups require technical skill, as well as big jumping ability.

She went on to say how her passion for horses began at a very young age. “Their humbling ways and their own personalities, and, of course, the interest in the sport of showjumping has just grown over the years,” said Lorrette.

Barry, who admitted he is a man of few words, makes up for his quiet personality on the arena, as he aims to place high in the world cup finals.

“ I focus on specific titles I want to win and direct my energy on those events,” said Barry.

They achieved great success in the showjumping scene as a couple, and are determined to continue to push their way forward in the industry. Lorette aims to win in the South African championship, while internationally she would love to compete for the country in the nation’s cup team in Europe; while Barry wants to win the world cup title on Sunday for now.
