Paulshof brings parkour to the community with first in-house competition

The first in-house parkour competition at the Parkour at Paragon gymnastics club in Paulshof yielded outstanding results for participating athletes.

Parkour athletes and enthusiasts of a new club in Paulshof took part in an in-house competition on September 17 that saw many flips and jumps.

With the sport growing in the country, Gymnastics South Africa introduced parkour as a discipline in 2019 and has seen the establishment of the club, Parkour at Paragon in 2021.

Thirty-four athletes from levels one to four took part on the day. Coach at the club Brett Fuller said he was pleased with the results on the day and that several participants had stood out on the sunny Saturday morning.
“The two lower levels participated in timed obstacle runs while the level three and four athletes did a freestyle run as well as a speed run,” he said.

“Thomas Raggett, who is our athlete who is representing South Africa for the first time in Tokyo at the International Gymnastics Federation (FIG) World Parkour Championships in October stood out on the day as well as Tyler Day, one of our up-and-coming female athletes, and Michael Jennett.”

The athletes were judged by Richard Marshall who is the Gymnastics South Africa National chairman of Parkour.
“The Parkour side of the club has grown well to the point that we have seven athletes competing at the upcoming South African Gym Games in Centurion on Sunday, October 2.

“We do not have another competition at the club planned as yet but I would like to have another one before the end of the year. There is also a district competition that some of our athletes will be competing in at the end of October,” said Fuller.

The club will host a bingo night on September 30 at 18:30 to raise funds for Fuller and Raggett who are attending the championships in Tokyo.
Tickets are R200 per person including 10 rounds of bingo and a light supper.
