The founder and director of Fourways-based performing arts studio Upstage Concepts, Jill Avis has praised her students for what they achieved at this year’s South African Championships of Performing Arts.

Avis said it was wonderful to see young people working on their talents and passion and producing such excellent results. “I took a team of 23 students to the South African Championships of Performing Arts where our students competed for nine days in Rustenburg and won 468 medals in the various categories in solos and group items.

“Our own 13-year-old Luyolo Matyolo won the Grand Champion Acting Award which means the highest mark of any contestant in acting at the SA Champs.”

She added another of her students Vongai Dhliwayo competed in the World Championships of Performing Arts in Los Angeles USA in August and was awarded a full scholarship to the New York Film Academy.

“This is the second time that an Upstage Concepts student has won the World Championships. In 2015, Donnaley Parker won it and she is one of the coaches at the school and is now the head of our Schools Division. We are very proud of our students and what they’ve achieved.”
