Pinnacle College Kyalami celebrates learners that participated and represented the school well at the 2023 Tricolore Games in Italy. Grade 9 swimmers Phakamani Zonke and Skyla Perumal both made the school and the province proud by leaving their marks at the seventh edition of the Giochi del Tricolore held in Italy.

The duo was part of the 135 South African participants that competed in six sporting codes, namely football, swimming, netball, basketball, 7s rugby, chess, and athletics. The international games featured youth sports events under the slogan ‘Sports can change people; people can change the world’ and hosted 25 cities from 19 countries competing in a variety of sporting codes.

Phakamani represented the province and the country proudly. Even though he did not bring back a medal, he managed to improve on all his personal best times for all the strokes he swam.

Skyla swam against 67 other international swimmers and she achieved personal best times for all seven races while claiming six wins out of seven of her races against her 67 competitors.

Phakamani said, “The Tri-Colour Games were really exciting and it was a once-in-a-lifetime experience. I will never forget the memories I made in Italy with the team and my friends. The experience was delightful – making friends from other countries, learning about new places, and meeting new people from different backgrounds. I loved the seventh edition of the Tri-Colour Games.”

Team South Africa ended up being number four in the tally of medals won. All participants were awarded provincial colours prior to departing by the Gauteng Department of Arts, Sports and Culture at a special honours event addressed by the late Oliver Tambo’s daughter, Thembi Tambo.
