Footballer and entrepreneur invests in football’s future

South African footballer Thato Molomo is proving that success off the pitch matters just as much as on it, from launching Molomo Marketing to help young stars in Fourways, to stepping into global classrooms.

Thato Molomo, a footballer and entrepreneur, who last year launched Molomo Marketing to give youngstars in Fourways a platform to kickstart their football careers, has been admitted into the Professional Footballers’ Association (PFA) Business School’s football and business management programme.

The three-year programme, run in partnership with the University of Portsmouth in England, combines academic study with practical football qualifications, including the UEFA B licence in coaching, the FA talent ID and scouting certificate, and preparation for the FIFA agent licence.

It is designed to prepare footballers for leadership roles in the sport, while accommodating their playing schedules. For Molomo, who balances his football career with his work at Molomo Marketing, the admission is an affirmation of his long-term vision.

“Personally, this admission is a milestone, because it affirms the journey I’ve been on – balancing football with a vision for my future beyond the game. Professionally, it prepares me to be a leader in football and business.”

The programme also offers participants the opportunity to learn directly from some of the sport’s most influential figures, including FIFA’s chief of global football development Arsène Wenger, former Arsenal vice-chairperson David Dein, and Brighton & Hove Albion CEO Paul Barber.

“Having access to these voices is not just inspiring; it’s preparation for the type of roles I want to take on in the future.”

Molomo said his time with clubs such as Kaizer Chiefs, Orlando Pirates, and Highlands Park have been pivotal experiences that shaped his discipline and leadership skills.

Currently playing for Transition FC in the Hollywoodbets Regional League, he continues to build on that foundation, while pursuing his academic and business aspirations.

He said he hopes his achievement will inspire young South African players to embrace education, alongside their sporting careers.

“Football is short, but your influence can last a lifetime if you invest in yourself beyond the game. Education doesn’t take away from your football; it actually strengthens it.”

With his admission into the PFA Business School, Molomo positions himself among a new generation of footballers determined to influence the game, not only on the pitch, but also in boardrooms and management structures that shape the future of global sport.
