Fourways cyclist rides to raise awareness and money to battle rare diseases
Inspired by his wife’s courage and determination, cyclist Mauritz Van Den Heever will take on this year’s 947 Ride Joburg to raise funds and awareness for Rare Diseases South Africa, one pedal stroke at a time.
When Mauritz Van Den Heever lines up for the 947 Ride Joburg this November, his mission will go far beyond crossing the finish line. He’ll be riding for something deeply personal… To raise awareness and funds for Rare Diseases South Africa (RDSA), in honour of his wife, Elindi, who lives with a rare condition.
“My wife is a Rare Diseases South Africa ambassador, and lives with a rare condition herself,” said Mauritz. “This cause is personal to me. I’ve seen first-hand the challenges faced by those affected, and I want to contribute to creating awareness and support for them.”

Each cyclist participating in Ride4Rare, a special campaign within Ride Joburg, commits to raising funds for Rare Diseases South Africa, a non-profit dedicated to improving the lives of individuals affected by rare diseases and congenital disorders.
The funds raised through Ride4Rare support advocacy, access to care, and education campaigns that help patients secure life-saving treatments and raise awareness about their conditions.
For Elindi, seeing her husband take up the cause has been deeply moving. “Having an organisation like Rare Diseases South Africa advocate for us, people who rarely have a voice, is incredible. Having a husband like Mauritz, who supports me in so many ways, including through this ride, is the most amazing gift. To every donor, rider, and supporter, thank you. You make a real difference.”

According to Nomsa Mtshali, head of patient services at Rare Diseases South Africa, the Ride4Rare initiative is about more than just sport; it’s a movement of solidarity and hope. “Ride4Rare is more than a cycling event; it’s a symbol of resilience. We encourage those with mobility to ride on behalf of those who cannot.
“Living with a rare disease is often a journey of uncertainty and courage. Many patients face delayed diagnoses, high medical costs, and limited access to specialists. Through Ride4Rare, we can continue fighting for visibility, research, and equitable healthcare.”

Rare Diseases South Africa welcomes support from individuals, families, and companies. You don’t have to be a cyclist to make an impact. Donations, volunteering, sharing patient stories, or even hosting awareness events can go a long way.
“Every action, big or small, helps us move closer to a world where no one living with a rare disease feels invisible,” says Mtshali.
As Mauritz prepares for race day, he hopes others will join him, whether on a bike, in spirit, or through the simple act of giving. “Ride Joburg is an incredible experience, but doing it for a cause, like Rare Diseases South Africa, gives every kilometre meaning. You’re not just racing… You’re changing lives.”
