SPARK Riversands learner Kganya Mpepo to represent South Africa on the world stage
Kganya is gearing up for the journey of a lifetime, representing South Africa at the 11th JSKA World Karate Championships in Japan.
At just 12 years old, and after just two years of training, SPARK Riversands Grade 6 learner Kganya Mpepo is preparing for the adventure of a lifetime.
He will travel to Matsuyama, Japan, to represent South Africa at the 11th JSKA World Karate Championships, taking place from October 31 to November 3.
It will be Kganya’s first international competition, and his first trip abroad. “Ever since I can remember, I’ve watched people do karate, and wanted to do it as well,” he said. Today, he trains under sensei Terry Mafuku at KaraTerry Karate School, a partnership that’s seen his skill and confidence soar.

In the lead-up to the championships, Kganya’s schedule has become more intense, with training every weekend, as well as on Mondays and Fridays. Yet, despite the demands of the sport, he remains dedicated to his academics.
“It’s pretty easy to balance right now. Karate has taught me discipline, focus, fire, and speed. SPARK Schools has helped me by teaching me to be responsible about my goals and to persist in reaching them.”
Kganya credits the school for connecting him with Mafuku and creating an environment that encourages balance and perseverance.
“If it wasn’t for SPARK Riversands, I wouldn’t have met sensei Terry, and I would never have had the opportunity to compete in the World Championships,” he said.
His mother, Anele, has watched her son’s passion grow from curiosity into commitment. She explained that his interest was kindled when he was in Grade 1, but it was only when he joined SPARK Riversands in 2024 that he finally had the opportunity to start training.
“Since enrolling at SPARK Schools, Kganya is more disciplined and has more confidence in himself, and this shines through in his performances.”
When Anele learned that her son had been selected to represent South Africa, she felt both pride and awe.

“I felt so proud of him, but also a bit overwhelmed. I want him to keep finding joy in the sport so that he can keep going to the highest level possible for him. He’s put in the hard work. He wasn’t handed the spot on the team without earning it. By wearing the South African colours, he’s already a champion.”
“We’re all incredibly proud of you, Kganya. Representing South Africa at the World Karate Championship in Japan is a testament to your hard work and dedication. Go out there and give it your all.
SPARK Riversands staff, parents, and scholars are cheering you on. As your principal, I am beaming with pride,” says Zamajola Majola, principal at the school.
