NBA Fan Box brings 80th season celebrations to Fourways fans

Basketball fans in Fourways got a taste of the 80th season celebrations as the NBA Fan Box brought hoops, gaming, music, and exclusive merchandise to Prison Break Market.

To mark the start of the NBA’s 80th season, fans in South Africa got a first-hand taste of the excitement as the league celebrated record-breaking performances and brought its culture to Johannesburg.

The recent opening games in the US set a high bar, with four 50-point performances, the most in NBA history to start a season.

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander scored 55 points for the Oklahoma City Thunder against the Indiana Pacers, Austin Reaves added 51 points and 11 rebounds for the Los Angeles Lakers versus the Sacramento Kings, Lauri Markkanen posted 51 points and 14 rebounds in Utah’s win over the Phoenix Suns, and Aaron Gordon hit 50 points in Golden State’s victory.

As part of the global celebrations, NBA Africa hosted a Fan Box activation at Prison Break Market in Fourways, creating a space where basketball, music, fashion, and entertainment collided.

Hosted by Jerome ‘Slim’ du Plooy, the event featured NBA2K gaming, merchandise, hoop games, and a Mocha replica of Travis Scott’s iconic G-Wagon.

Du Plooy said the Fan Box was one of the most unique ideas ever used in South Africa. He added it was like a mini theme park where fans could shoot hoops and play games.

“Seeing families come together, engaging with the game, enjoying the music, gaming, and prizes, it’s something really special. Every province in South Africa should experience this because it shows how much people love the game,” he said.

Head of NBA South Africa, Zeph Masote, explained the importance of activations such as the Fan Box in bringing the NBA experience to local audiences.

“Our mission is to inspire and connect people everywhere through the power of basketball.

We’re always looking for ways to meet our fans where they are – and because basketball intersects with sport, lifestyle, art, and entertainment, it was only fitting to celebrate this season’s NBA tip-off with an activation that brought all those elements together.

“The energy on the court was incredible, and we’re excited to bring more experiences like this to South African fans in the future.”

Masote added that connecting through culture, not just the sport, was key.

“The NBA is a sports and lifestyle brand. Our audience is young, diverse, and passionate, with interests beyond the court – from music and fashion to gaming and social media.

We show up in the right cultural spaces and collaborate with the right personalities, whether musicians, sneakerheads, gamers, or athletes from other sports.

Many fans have adopted the work ethic and philosophies of legends like Kobe Bryant, applying them to their own lives and communities. This is what makes the NBA unique.”
