Technology helps keep Joburg Council in 2020

JOBURG – Residents urged to continue being active citizens and holding all councillors including the mayor and MMC's and their offices accountable over the festive season and into the new year.

City of Johannesburg Speaker of Council Nonceba Molwele and her office are thrilled to finally reach the end of the year.

After a year of having to adapt and adjust due to Covid-19 and all its challenges, the Speaker was impressed with the City’s ability to navigate the times. In the near future, the Speaker will be doing everything in her power to help improve employment, service delivery and women’s safety in the city.

Molwele said, “I would like to see services delivery reach all our people and I want to see an improved economy of Joburg that can absorb all the unemployed citizens, in particular young people. I would like to see a well-governed city, one that puts its people first, where the Batho Pele principles are in the lifeblood of our officials. Lastly, I want to see a clean, safe city for women while using public transport.”

Molwele reflected on the challenges, successes and triumphs of a year no one could have ever imagined. Sharing life-saving Covid-19 information with the residents of the city while also helping equip councillors with the necessary skills to ensure the city could continue its efforts to guarantee service delivery, was her office’s biggest achievement of the year. With the assistance of the City’s councillors and staff, the speakers office launched an online civic education show, The Talk and unveiled a loud hailing van which would be used to share Covid-19 safety information with the public.

Ensuring that council meetings and sittings could take place through online video platforms was another success for her office this year. She said, “I want to commend the City of Joburg councillors and officials who worked right through the pandemic. Some were frontline workers who were so committed to serving our people.” Going into the new year, she has urged residents to continue being active citizens and hold all councillors including the mayor, MMCs and their offices accountable

Molwele and her office wished the city’s residents a joyful, peaceful and safe festive season.

“[This year] has been a long difficult year for many of us. Some of us were lucky or blessed to make it through. This is the time for us to heal, to reflect and support those who are going through difficult times. Those who are blessed to go on holiday with their families, please enjoy this time. Remember this is a time to recharge and rest where we can.”
