Fourways residents without power for nearly 24 hours as repairs delayed by rain

Residents in Lonehill, Magaliessig and Pineslopes have been left without electricity for almost 24 hours, following a network failure that Eskom has attributed to multiple cable faults.

Love may be in the air…but not in Lonehill, Magaliessig, and Pineslopes.

Residents across these suburbs are spending Valentine’s Day without electricity, facing 24 hours of darkness after multiple cable faults disrupted the local power supply.

Eskom confirmed that technicians had identified one of four faults affecting supply and began repairs on February 13, but work was halted due to heavy rainfall.

“Jointers had commenced with repairs and joining of the located fault. However, work had to be stopped due to heavy rainfall in the area. Work will resume once the rain has subsided and it is safe for our technicians to continue,” Eskom said, apologising for the inconvenience and assuring residents that updates would follow as progress is made.

Ward 93 councillor Vino Reddy who has been constantly updating frustrated residents about the power issue said they did not have enough staff to carry out the repairs.

“Eskom apologises for the delay owing to the fact that they did not have enough personnel to complete the repairs. More technicians, including jointers, have now been brought in to complete the task. Power should be restored once the jointers have completed their work and if there are no further faults.”

He said at this stage, Eskom has not provided an estimated time for restoration.

The outage comes just a week after a similar disruption in the same suburbs, prompting residents to question Eskom’s insistence that Lonehill does not experience monthly power failures.

The utility has rejected claims of regular scheduled outages.

Eskom spokesperson Amanda Qithi said the utility’s records do not support claims of monthly outages in Lonehill.

“Interruptions occur from time to time due to faults, equipment failure, or maintenance requirements, as is the case with electricity networks globally. When outages occur, Eskom prioritises restoration as quickly and safely as possible,” she said at the time.
