Dark day sparks man’s mission to uplift Diepsloot
For community activist Vincent Ndou, changing lives began with witnessing a man’s darkest day.
Two years ago, community activist Vincent Ndou was still focused on helping people in his immediate neighbourhood. Today, his compassion reaches every corner of Diepsloot, where he has become a familiar face to struggling families in need of hope and practical support.
His journey started after a shack fire left a resident with nothing but the clothes he was wearing. As community members rushed to donate clothing, Ndou watched the man try on items that were either too big or too small. Although people meant well, the moment stayed with him.

“It broke my heart, honestly. I realised that people don’t just need donations. They need someone who truly cares about their situation and is willing to walk the journey with them.”
That experience inspired him to take action. What started with helping a few families in his own area has grown into a community-wide initiative that now supports vulnerable residents across Diepsloot.
Through donations from generous individuals and organisations, Ndou helps provide clothing, food parcels, blankets and other essentials to those facing difficult circumstances.
His commitment has earned him recognition in the community, allowing him to expand his reach and assist even more families.
As winter continues to grip, Ndou said one need stands out above all others: school shoes for children.
“Children are going to school in worn-out shoes or shoes that don’t fit anymore; every child deserves to walk into the classroom with dignity and confidence.”

He believes that something as simple as a pair of school shoes can restore a child’s self-esteem and remove one more barrier to learning.
Despite the growing demand for assistance, Ndou remains driven by the belief that every act of kindness has the power to change a life.
He is appealing to businesses, organisations and members of the public to support his ongoing efforts by donating school shoes and other essential items.
“For many people, these donations are more than just gifts; they are a reminder that someone cares, and sometimes that’s exactly what gives a person the strength to keep going.”
