Heidelberg’s FRC launches rehab and skills programme to support dual diagnosis patients

The Freedom Recovery Centre is strengthening addiction recovery and mental health services in Heidelberg with the launch of a hybrid rehabilitation programme.

The Freedom Recovery Centre announced major expansions aimed at improving addiction recovery and mental support in Heidelberg and the wider Sedibeng district.

The organisation was awarded the contract to manage SA’s first hybrid model rehabilitation programme at the Mabutho Hlatshwayo in-patient treatment centre.

The programme operates in partnership with the Department of Social Development (DSD), which manages daily operations, while the FRC provides specialised therapeutic services.

According to FRC representative Esti van Rensburg, the expansion reflects a growing need for integrated care.

“Our approach goes beyond simply helping people achieve sobriety. We focus on restoring dignity, independence and hope by combining clinical rehabilitation, mental health support and skills development.

“By equipping individuals with practical skills, professional training and a supportive environment, we are giving them the tools to rebuild their lives and successfully reintegrate into society. Every person who walks through our doors is treated as a whole human being, not just a patient, and that is at the heart of everything we do,” she said.

Van Rensburg said the centre had also expanded its capacity to accommodate 50 service users at its second facility, including 20 beds for those affected by substance addiction and mental health disorders.

“In addition to clinical services, the FRC has become a Quality Council For Trades & Occupations-accredited skills development provider, offering accredited training in technical trades, professional services and creative and agricultural skills.

“The initiative is designed to reduce relapse by addressing unemployment and skills shortages. This year, we want to strengthen our partnership with the DSD and establish a new shelter for individuals not yet ready for full inpatient treatment,” she said.
