Eviction dust surrounding military base not about to settle

NIGEL - HERAUT just received information that a general notice (dated 8 December) was issued by the Army Support Base (Johannesburg) to all occupants of the former Marievale Engineer Regiment military base.

According to the notice, occupants are informed that various crime prevention operations will be conducted throughout December and January.

Occupants are also informed that the ad hoc crime prevention operations are aimed at the following:

*             drugs within the military area;

*             sub-letting of houses and back yards on military premises;

*             illegal occupying of houses that belong to the military;

*             illegal activities such as drug dealing, brothels and shebeens on military premises; and

*             occupants must be able to produce military identification documents which will be verified against the lists in possession of the Army Support Base Johannesburg.

The notice also stipulates that occupants should know that the houses in the married quarters section, belong to the Department of Defence and therefore everybody is required to abide by the rules and regulations. Military action will subsequently be taken if members violate the rules and regulations.

The army has further warned that if occupants are not found on the lists of Army Support Base Johannesburg, written authority (signed by the allocating authority), must be provided as proof that members are authorised to reside in these houses.

Occupants not authorised to stay in these houses, are instructed by the army to leave the premises without further discussions, on/or before 5 January 2016.
