Educator and public relations officer of the school, Mrs Liezl van Staden told HERAUT she was called by a Grade 12 learner around 14:15, saying Thabang had collapsed opposite the road while waiting for transport to Duduza.
Despite continuous efforts to revive the 16 year old, he was declared dead by emergency workers from Nigel Fire Brigade.
Officials from the Department of Education visited the school on July 27 to provide support and counselling to educators and learners.
Thabang had been living with his grandmother and uncle in Duduza, since both his parents died when he was a baby.
“I was like a father to him. He used to tell me that all the time and it made me feel so proud,” Thabang’s uncle Petros told HERAUT.
A funeral is expected to be held on August 6, but the indigent family suffers financially to such an extent that they cannot afford a burial and have pleaded for help.
