Pedal power for World Environment Day
The day will include all sorts of fun activities in addition to the races.
NIGEL – In celebration of World Environment Day, Earth Owl and the Khuthaza Foundation will be hosting their annual Ride4Life biking event on June 5 at John Vorster Stadium in Nigel.
“The focus of the event will be to gather funds in order to make a difference in the Nigel, Springs and Heidelberg areas,” said Roché Pepler, one of the co-founders of Earth Owl.
Registration for the race will start at 6.30am and will continue through to 5pm for the final event.
The 40km race will start at approximately 9am, followed by the 25km race at 9.30am.
“The 40km Pro Earth route is designed for the more experienced rider,” explained Pepler. “Whereas the 25km caters more for the mountain biking beginner, but the route still shouldn’t be underestimated.
“The night ride has absolutely no tactical challenges.”
The final event, the 10km group night-ride, will start at 6pm, finishing at 7pm.
“We encourage all night riders to come dressed in neon clothing, neon glow sticks and other attire,” Pepler continued.
“We want to end the day with a colourful blast. The day will be packed with fun and entertainment. There will be entertainment for the children, food and craft stalls, music and much more.”
Entry costs are as follows:
• 40km race, R250
• 25km race, R200
• 10km night ride, R100
• R5 entry at the gate
The first 100 entries will receive a limited edition Ride4Life cap and medal.
Other grand prizes and spot prizes to the value of R3 000 can also be won on the day.
“Since the event is focused on World Environment Day, all of the proceeds will be allocated towards community upliftment in Nigel and the surrounding areas,” Pepler said.
“We will also plant a series of indigenous trees as well as conduct a river clean-up along the Blesbokspruit.”
