SAPS members Sgt Vusumuzi Zondo and Const Jean-Pierre Lewis were conducting regular patrols in the Heidelberg area when they noticed a man and a woman sitting on the sidewalk drinking alcohol.

When the pair saw the police vehicle, they ran away and jumped over a fence.

The members gave chase and called for backup. When additional officers arrived, the area was blocked off and a thorough search was conducted.

The man was found hiding in a bar along Voortrekker Street. When he was searched, an unlicensed firearm was found in his possession and he was arrested.

The serial number of the weapon had been filed off.

After further investigations, it was established that the man is a parolee with 12 prior convictions.

There is also a possibility that he could be linked to at least three robberies that have taken place in Heidelberg since May 2021.

Further investigations are being conducted.
