Taxi driver killed in Shalimar Rank shooting, suspect in custody

A suspect handed himself over to police and has since appeared in court.

A taxi driver succumbed to his injuries after a shooting at the Shalimar Taxi Rank on February 14.

A 30-year-old resident appeared in the Heidelberg Magistrate’s Court on February 17 about the incident.

It is understood the accused handed himself over to the police. The motive for the shooting is not yet clear.

The victim was rushed to a local hospital and succumbed to his wounds on February 17. The police changed the charge from attempted murder to murder.

The accused remains in custody and will appear again on February 21.

It has since been disclosed that the accused was a member of the Ratanda Anti-Crime Unit.

The unit has distanced itself from the incident. In a statement, they clarified the suspect was part of the unit at one stage but was no longer involved.

The statement reads that whatever any member does in their private capacity is not sanctioned by the unit.
