Heidelberg police launch manhunt after fatal robbery

Crime spree carried out by two robbers behind Heidelberg Mall.

What should have been a peaceful day of rest and celebration on May 1 was shattered by a violent crime spree that left one man dead, another wounded, and several others traumatised after being robbed at gunpoint.

Heidelberg SAPS have launched an urgent manhunt for the men behind the string of armed robberies that rocked the community.

According to a statement from one of the victims, he was walking along Makapan Street at 18:15 when he was approached by two men and threatened at gunpoint.

He was searched, and his cellphone and money were taken by the pair.

He was then instructed to lie on the grass.

Not long thereafter, a second pedestrian was robbed on Makapan Street. This victim was shot by the robbers.

Two more pedestrians were robbed thereafter on the same road. One of the pedestrians managed to run away while the second was fatally shot.

According to reports, the last two victims did not see the first victim who was shot lying close by.

Police and emergency services arrived quickly on the scene.

The wounded victim was taken to Heidelberg Hospital and is reported to be in a serious condition.

Law enforcement officials cordoned off the scene and the area was searched for evidence.

Heidelberg SAPS is investigating a case of murder, attempted murder and armed robbery.
