Shalimar Ridge marches against poor service delivery

Service delivery petition by Shalimar Ridge community.

Shalimar Ridge’s residents marched to the Lesedi Local Municipality (LLM) on November 10.

A memorandum was drawn up to hand over to LLM. The march was peaceful and no incidents or damage occurred.

Jabulani Shabalala of the Shalimar Ridge Residents Association highlighted the gripes that are stipulated in the memorandum.

The issues that need to be addressed:

• High electricity costs and disconnections

• Basic delivery services and non-delivery services

• Property assessment cost escalations

• Lack of infrastructure maintenance

• Bad treatment from other municipalities and safety and security to the residents of Shalimar Ridge.

The community was in full voice at times and demanded that the issues get urgent attention.

When the electricity was cut off to certain households in the Heidelberg area a month or two ago, Shalimar Ridge was also affected.

Certain households are still waiting for their electricity to be restored by LLM.

LLM Executive Mayor Mluleki Nkosi accepted the memorandum from Shabalala.

In addressing the community members, Nkosi said “The issues will get their urgent attention. The petition is a legal document and needs to be scrutinised. We will be able to give a calculated response soon.

“We are committed to addressing the issues as ensure that the issues are dealt with effectively,” concluded Nkosi.

The gathering dispersed peacefully.
