Lesedi Local Municipality (LLM) executive mayor Mluleki Nkosi, speaker of council Phindi Mpemvu and MMC for Community Services Thulani Mahanini visited the community to see first-hand how the taxi industry in Heidelberg operates.
This was part of the municipality’s commemorations of Transport Month, observed in October.
Part of the excursion was to join commuters in being transported by taxi from Shalimar Ridge taxi rank to Heidelberg town.
“We are attempting to build a better transport infrastructure and grow our local communities in collaboration with the taxi owners and various other stakeholders,” Nkosi said.
The chairperson of the Heidelberg District Taxi Association (HDTA), Tshepo Molaba, took the mayor and his council members on a tour around the taxi ranks and explained the different taxis available in Heidelberg.
“We are looking at improvements by advancing into a more digital and smart taxi industry,” Molaba said.
“That may include that commuters will be able to pay with their smartphones in the future.”
Nkosi concluded, “We thank all the obedient and great drivers. We wish you many more safe miles ahead.”
