Sport against crime games planned

Soccer and netball games are planned for Ratanda.

The Lesedi Sports Foundation is planning a sports against crime initiative.

The foundation’s president, Robert Buthelezi, and the vice president, Thulani Gama, met to discuss the plans and what is in the pipeline at Kgoro Ya Thuto Secondary School in Ratanda on October 26.

The event will comprise soccer for girls and U15 boys and netball games. It will be at the Ratanda Stadium.
Eighteen teams will vie for the tournament‘s top spot, which will run for six weeks.

The dates have not yet been finalised but will be available in due course.

Buthelezi said, “The initiative aims to uplift the community and promote an alternative to crime in the area. We must ensure that the youth do not fall victim and get roped into gangs and commit criminal acts. We need to change the children’s mindsets to play sports and be active. This way, we hope for a better lifestyle for the community in Ratanda.”

Thulani Gama, the vice-president of the Lesedi Sports Foundation.

Gama said, “We want to revive sports in Ratanda and appeal to the community to support the project. We want the youth to move away from crime to a better lifestyle. We are looking for more sponsors and role players to get involved in the initiative.”

Top sporting scouts will attend the games, hoping to find the next sporting star from the area.

The first version of the games, held in June, was deemed a huge success.
