SANDF Unit Vlakvark brings fun and community together

The annual Vlakvark fun day combined fitness, fun, and fundraising for the local community.

The SANDF Unit Vlakvark hosted its annual fun day and fundraiser on Saturday at John Vorster Stadium in Nigel.

The event kicked off with a lively 2.4km fun run, followed by a variety of activities, including a wheelbarrow race, slingshot challenges, and grenade throwing demonstrations.

According to Colonel Karel Groesbeek, one of the organisers, the event aimed to support and uplift the community.

“We are here today to reach out to our communities, especially the less fortunate. Children from both primary and secondary schools were able to participate in all activities free of charge. We do not discriminate, and everyone is welcome,” he said.

Retired member of the association Marina Pierneef, echoed the importance of giving back.

“We are here to show love and support. Though we don’t have much, we do our best to take part and make a difference,” she said.

Learners also embraced the spirit of the day.

Blessing Bayizitunda 17-year-old learner from Hoërskool John Vorster, said she enjoyed the experience.

“I participated in all the activities. It was lovely and the people were so welcoming. I would like to encourage more learners from different backgrounds to join them next time,” she said.
