Ratanda Community Initiative calls for baby donations to support young mothers
A Ratanda community initiative founded by journalist Nonkululeko Vundla is calling on residents, businesses and organisations to donate baby clothes, blankets, toys and other essentials to support young mothers who are struggling to provide for their newborns.
A community initiative in Ratanda is calling on residents, organisations and well-wishers to donate essential baby items to support young mothers who are struggling to provide for their newborns.
The Ratanda Community Initiative, founded by community journalist Nonkululeko Vundla, is collecting new and gently used baby clothes, toys, blankets, bathing sets and other essential items for newborns whose mothers cannot afford them.
Vundla said the initiative was born from what she witnessed while travelling through different communities in her work as a community journalist.
“Through my work as a community journalist, I travel around different communities covering stories, and during these visits I started noticing the struggles faced by women who are pregnant and not working. I saw that many of these women were struggling to afford even the necessities for their babies. This made me realise that there was a need for us to do something to help and assist them,” she said.
Vundla said the initiative’s focus is to provide practical assistance to young mothers and their babies during a challenging period.
“We aim to support young mothers and their newborns by collecting and providing essential items such as baby clothes, blankets, toys and bathing sets.
“We want to encourage the community to come together and help those who are in need. Giving back is important because we all have something to offer, and it does not have to be money. Sometimes, giving away clothes, blankets, or other items you no longer use can make a big difference to someone who cannot afford them. If we support one another and give back to our communities, we can make a real difference in people’s lives,” she said.
The initiative appeals to residents with baby items they no longer use, encouraging them to donate them to families who need them.
Businesses, organisations and individuals who can contribute are also encouraged to support the campaign.
