The municipality has urged residents to dispose of waste responsibly and help protect the local sewer network from blockages, spillages and potential health hazards.

In a statement released on August 26, the municipality warned residents against flushing foreign objects, food waste and other inappropriate materials down toilets or disposing of them into sewer drains.

The warning follows recent sewer unblocking operations during which municipal technical teams discovered various foreign objects and unsuitable materials inside sewer lines.

These included food waste, oil, fats and grease, which can accumulate in sewer pipes and cause serious blockages.

According to the municipality, such blockages can result in sewer spillages, potentially creating health and environmental risks for surrounding communities. Residents have also been cautioned against opening or entering sewer manholes.

The municipality stressed that this is extremely dangerous and that sewer infrastructure should only be accessed by authorised personnel.

The municipality is calling on residents to take responsibility for the disposal of waste and to help safeguard public infrastructure.
