Discover Heidelberg’s hidden history
Heidelberg residents and visitors are invited to explore the town’s fascinating history during a free Heritage Open Day at the Old Jail and Kloof Cemetery on September 24.
Residents and visitors will have an opportunity to explore Heidelberg’s rich history and heritage during a Heritage open day at the Old Jail on Heritage Day, September 24.
The event, presented by the Suikerbosrand Shellhole and the Heidelberg Heritage Association, will offer visitors a fascinating journey into the town’s past, including historical presentations, guided tours and stories associated with some of Heidelberg’s historic landmarks.
The programme will start at 09:00 when the doors of the Old Jail, situated at 59 Jordaan Street, open to the public.
At 10:00, local historian Tony Burisch will take visitors on a visual journey through Heidelberg’s history with a special PowerPoint presentation highlighting the town’s rich heritage.
At 11:00, Evert Pistorius will lead the History and Ghost Whisperer Tour, during which visitors can explore the historic jail cells and hear tales and experiences connected to the building.
The programme will continue at noon with a guided tour of the Heidelberg Kloof Cemetery, situated at the end of Fenter Street. Burisch will guide visitors through the cemetery and share stories about Heidelberg’s founders and others who played a role in the town’s history.
Entrance to the event and all tours are free.
Donations, however, are welcome to help with the maintenance and preservation of the historic site.
The organisers have encouraged residents, families, history enthusiasts and visitors to attend the event and learn more about Heidelberg’s local heritage and historic landmarks.
