Gauteng MEC for Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation Lebogang Maile officially opened and handed over a new sports facility at Bertha Gxowa Primary School on Friday, in a move aimed at strengthening school sport and promoting youth development.
The event was attended by Lesedi Local Municipality Executive Mayor Clr Mluleki Nkosi, Speaker of Council Phindile Mpemvu, District Director Pheelo Metsing and Mamello Sigasa, representing the Office of the Premier, alongside other distinguished guests.

The programme featured performances by the school choir, gumboot dancers and poets, who entertained guests and showcased the learners’ artistic talents.
Teacher Mokgauta Motloung reflected on the history of Bertha Gxowa Primary School, highlighting its journey, growth and achievements over the years.

“Looking back at the history of our school, we are proud of the journey we have travelled, the progress we have made and the achievements we have recorded over the past 11 years. This milestone reflects the dedication of our teachers, learners, parents and the broader school community.
“The new sports facility is another important step in creating opportunities for our learners to grow, discover their talents and excel beyond the classroom,” she said.
Nkosi thanked Maile for the investment in the school and emphasised the importance of the facility in creating opportunities for learners.

“We would like to thank the MEC for investing in our children and our community. This facility is important because it will give learners an opportunity to participate in sport, develop their talents and acquire valuable life skills. We hope they will use it to their full potential,” he said.
The mayor further highlighted the role of sporting infrastructure in encouraging young people to lead healthy and active lifestyles while developing discipline, teamwork and commitment.

Mpemvu also welcomed the development, saying the facility would benefit children in many ways by providing opportunities for sporting participation and personal growth.

“This facility will assist our children in many ways. It will give them a platform to explore their abilities, develop their sporting talents and learn important values that can help them in their daily lives,” she said.
Gauteng Sports Confederation President Vivian Lottering thanked the mayor and addressed the issue of gender-based violence, calling for continued efforts to build safer communities and promote respect and equality.

“We must continue working together to address gender-based violence. Developing young people through sport should go hand in hand with teaching respect, discipline and responsibility,” he said.
The programme was directed by Fusi Mickey Modisane.

The new facility is expected to provide learners with an improved environment in which to participate in sporting activities, nurture their abilities and develop essential life skills.
