Benoni Cambridge United thrash Jealous Down 4-0 ahead of top-of-the-table clash
Benoni Cambridge United overcame a first-half red card to secure a convincing 4-0 victory over Jealous Down FC. They now turn their attention to a crucial top-of-the-table clash against Luso Africa in Nigel on October 24.
Benoni Cambridge United secured an emphatic 4-0 victory over Jealous Down FC in a recently played Hollywoodbets Regional League encounter at Tsakane Stadium, demonstrating resilience after being reduced to 10 men before half-time.
The visitors took control early, circulating the ball patiently to find openings in the home side’s defence. Their pressure resulted in a penalty, which last season’s top goal scorer, Ponane Nhlapo, calmly converted to give BCU a 1-0 lead.
Jealous Down fought back and earned a penalty two minutes before the break, but the BCU goalkeeper produced an excellent save with his foot to preserve the advantage.
The visitors also received a red card before half-time, leaving them to play the entire second half with 10 men. Despite the setback, BCU returned with renewed intensity.
Captain Banele Mkhwanazi doubled their lead with a well-directed header from a corner kick. Jealous Down created opportunities to get back into the game, but BCU remained disciplined defensively.
As the home side pushed forward in search of a goal, spaces opened up at the back, allowing Nesh Komane to capitalise on the counter-attack and score twice to complete the 4-0 victory.
Coach Eddie Dista praised his players for their determination and tactical discipline, particularly after the red card.
“Playing a man short isn’t easy and requires a lot of hard work and discipline. I knew Jealous Down had to open up if they wanted to get something out of the game, but in doing so, they also left themselves exposed. In the end, it’s the small details that made the difference, but it was a big effort and a lot of good work from the players, including those on the bench who came on and made a difference,” he said.
Club chairman Ignatius Maphike welcomed the victory but acknowledged the challenges of building cohesion following the merger of the two teams.
“We are happy with the result, but we have to work harder. It is not easy bringing two teams together and expecting them to gel easily on the field of play, but we trust the process,” he said.
He also appealed to potential sponsors to support the club’s development and ambitions.
Benoni Cambridge United will now prepare for a crucial top-of-the-table clash against Luso Africa, a Primrose-based club from Germiston, scheduled for October 24 in Nigel.
BCU will look to carry their winning momentum into the encounter as they continue their Hollywoodbets Regional League campaign.
