Heidelberg Hospital is making strides towards digital transformation as it introduces new technology to improve patient flow, reduce waiting times, and enhance administrative processes at the facility.

The Gauteng Legislature’s eGovernment and Research Development Committee, together with representatives from eGovernment and the Office of the Chief Information Officer in the Gauteng Department of Health, visited the hospital on September 10 to assess its progress towards digitalisation.

During the visit, Heidelberg Hospital’s Information and Communication Technology Manager, Sibonelo Dlamini, provided an overview of the digital systems currently being implemented at the facility. Dlamini highlighted the Integrated Patient Queue Management System, which has been operational at the hospital for four months.

“The Queue Management System has been rolled out at Heidelberg Hospital and has been operating for four months now; it is very beneficial to our clients. With this system, we can trace patients and it can also assist us in collecting revenue,” he said.

The digital transformation initiative is expected to improve patient flow through the hospital by reducing queues and making it easier to manage appointments and patient information.

The system includes self-service kiosks, mobile booking applications, SMS notifications for queue tokens, and tablets used by staff to help allocate and transfer patients between different service points.

The visit forms part of broader efforts to modernise healthcare services in Gauteng and use technology to improve efficiency and the patient experience.
