Investigation reveals Rainbow Meat Supply’s non-compliance practices

Teaser: Sonia Mzunga still hopes the Gauteng Department of Labour will assist her after being unlawfully dismissed by Rainbow Meat Supply.

Investigations by the Gauteng Department of Labour (GDL) proved the allegations that Rainbow Meat Supply (RMS), a Katlehong-based company registered in 2018, was non-compliant.

This follows the GDL’s visit to RMS on March 25 to investigate allegations of non-compliance practices. Former employee Sonia Mzunga from Palm Ridge, Katlehong, brought the matter to light and discovered she was not registered with the Unemployment Insurance Fund (UIF).

She uncovered this when she visited the GDL’s Alberton branch with hopes to claim after she lost her job shortly after being involved in a vehicle accident.

According to Mzunga, the business manager refused to acknowledge her as an employee after a car accident that left her with serious injuries on July 29, 2022. This is even though, in her words, the EMS management has acknowledged in writing that she is engaged as an apprentice.

The latter also confirms she has been with the company since July 13, 2020, as a sales representative.

During the investigation, inspectors found that the owner and management of RMS did not register employees with the UIF and compensation fund.

The GDL communication officer, Mishack Magakwe, confirmed this but said the employer maintains Mzunga was not an employee of RMS.

Background story

A low-spirited Mzunga emailed Kathorus MAIL on February 12, expressing her dissatisfaction with her former employer.

She claimed the company refused to take accountability because they left her to fend for herself and accused her manager of unlawfully dismissing her from her duties without providing any documentation.

Challenging times

Without any household income, things became more difficult for her, and she encountered a financial dead-end, stripping her of her ability to provide basic needs like food and sanitary products for her primary school-going daughter.

She suffers from recurring headaches, dizziness, blackouts and failing eyesight, an additional expense for her.
Mzunga still pleads with Good Samaritans to lend a helping hand to help keep her family afloat during these difficult times.

Anyone wanting to assist the family with food and personal care products can contact Mzunga on 060 570 2564 or haruzivi676@gmail.com
